PORT ALLEGANY – Eleventh-seeded Clarion-Limestone held off a frantic Port Allegany fourth-quarter rally to hold on for a 60-55 win over the homestanding sixth-seeded Lady Gators in the opening round of the District 9 Class A girls’ playoffs Tuesday night. C-L (9-12) led 53-37 early in the fourth quarter before Port Allegany (14-9) went on an 18-4 run to cut the deficit to three, 58-55, with 52 seconds left. Jade Walker then hit a pair of free throws with to make it 60-55, but the Lady Lions then missed six straight free throws to give Port Allegany a chance. The Lady Gators, though, weren’t able to take advantage of those misses and failed to score the rest of the game. It was all C-L from midway through the first quarter into the second quarter, as the Lady Lions went on a 16-0 run to take an early 23-8 lead. But Port Allegany fought back and close the deficit to eight, 29-21, at halftime and then got within four, 29-25, early in the third quarter. C-L, however, used a 7-0 spurt to start a quarter-ending 21-10 run to take a 50-35 lead into the fourth quarter. Olivia Pinson led C-L with 23 points and 10 rebounds with Kiana Laugand chipping in 15 points and seven boards, Lynnie Schirmer 10 points and eight assists and Walker 13 rebounds. Kyley Mickle led Port Allegany with 15 points with Shanell Halle and Renee Edgell chipping in 10 each. C-L will now make the trip right back up north Thursday when it travels to Coudersport for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal game. NOTES – Neither team shot well from the line.
