FRILLS CORNERS – Eighth-seeded North Clarion slowly pulled away from ninth-seeded Austin to get a 42-28 win in the opening round of the District 9 Class A girls’ basketball playoffs Tuesday night at North Clarion.

The game was tied at 12 at the end of the first quarter but North Clarion (15-9) outscored Austin (12-11) 11-7 in the second quarter to take a 23-19 halftime lead. The She-Wolves then extended that lead to 32-24 at the end of three quarters before winning the final frame 10-4.

Karlee Cyphert paced North Clarion with 16 points including a pair of 3-pointers with Jess Tarr chipping in 11 tallies.

Emily Wambaugh led Austin with a double-double scoring 10 points and collecting 10 rebounds, while Brandi Kio added 11 points. Austin’s leading scorer Katelyn Valenti, the eighth-leading scorer in District 9 (15.1 ppg) was limited to just two points.

North Clarion will now travel to top-seeded Elk County Catholic in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Thursday. It is the second straight quarterfinal appearance for the She-Wolves, who lost to West Forest in the quarters a year ago.
