DUKE CENTER – On a night where points were at a premium, Spryce York and Taylor Thomas each supplied double figures in points and rebounds to lead Otto-Eldred to a 39-28 win over visiting Brockway in the opening round of the District 9 Class A girls’ playoffs Tuesday.

The Lady Terrors (17-6), winners of six in a row, held Brockway (7-17) to nine first-half points and led 16-9 at intermission.

“Spryce York had a very strong game, especially in the first half, which helped us get the lead and maintain it” Otto-Eldred head coach John Hepfer said.

York scored seven of her 12 points in the first half and completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Thomas, meanwhile, scored 10 of her game-high 14 points, she also added 13 rebounds and four blocked shots, in the second half to help Otto-Eldred maintain its edge.

But despite Thomas’ second-half play, it wasn’t easy for the Lady Terrors as Brockway closed to within a point on four separate occasions but couldn’t get over the hump.

“We were fortunate to hold the lead until Thomas hit some big shots for us,” Hepfer said. “Brockway played very good defense, and we turned the ball over more than we wanted to.”

Michel Mancuso and Jalina Sabatose led Brockway with 11 points each.

Otto-Eldred will now face Union, a 68-48 winner over Sheffield, in the quarterfinals Thursday.

“As big of a win the win over Coudersport was last week, there isn’t a bigger game on the schedule than the one coming up Thursday,” Hepfer said. “A win gets us to the semifinals and also qualifies us for the PIAA playoffs.”
