By Rich Rhoades CLARION — Leading from start to finish, the Brookville Raiders hung on at the end and beat Kane for their first District 9 championship in 13 seasons. In a physical affair on both ends of the court, the Raiders notched a 52-48 victory at Clarion University’s Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium. The Raiders’ inside trio of Jared Heschke, Chad Brocious and Zane Hackett played a strong inside game, combining to block 12 shots and alter plenty of more. Kane made just 5 of 30 shots in the first half and shot just 31.1 percent for the game. “I thought defensively we played pretty darned good,” Brookville head coach Bud Baughman said. “Inside, we changed a lot of shots and the big guys were fortunate to stay out of foul trouble and we hit some clutch shots of our own down the stretch and that was the difference.” But not by much. The Wolves trailed by as many as 10 points early in the second half, but climbed back into the game. Senior forward Arie Paup scored Kane’s first 11 points of the fourth quarter, nine of them on three-pointers. Paup’s final three-pointer got Kane to within 42-41 with 3:47 left in the game. Ninety seconds later, Paup fouled out with a team-high 18 points. The Raiders (17-7) answered Paup’s heroics with six straight points on a three-pointer by Dan Ion and three points by Brocious. That run put the Raiders up 48-41 with 1:47 left. But back came Kane (15-9) again, and thanks to the Raiders missing 5 of 8 free throws, the Wolves had a chance to tie the game down 51-48 with under 20 seconds remaining. But Dave Bucheit misfired on a three-point shot and Kyle Baughman hit 1 of 2 free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the title. “I thought it would be close, probably 2 to 4 points, especially how the way we played up there,” said Baughman, whose team won at Kane, 46-45, back on Feb. 15. “Thankfully for us, we got off to a fairly good start. They hit some unbelievable shots down the stretch and hit three-ball after three-ball.” The Raiders put three players in double-figure scoring. Heschke scored 16 points to lead the way, Baughman scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and Brocious finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 blocks. Bucheit, Kane’s top scorer this year mostly in the paint as a 6-foot-4 center, turned in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. But while Bucheit made 3 of 8 three-point shots, he was 1-of-14 from inside the arc, a lot of it inside against the Raiders big front line. Brookville led 13-5 to start the game before Bucheit’s steal and three-point shot just before the first quarter horn found the bottom of the net to cut the lead to 13-8. The Raiders led 23-15 at intermission and pushed to their largest lead at 27-17 after Ion’s steal and pass to Baughman for a breakaway layup with 6:42 left in the third quarter. Brookville led 31-24 with 1:49 left in the third quarter before Kane’s 6-0 run cut it to 31-30 in the final minute of the third. However, the Raiders scored the final five points of the quarter, four on two baskets by Heschke along with a conventional three-point play by Baughman with seven seconds on the clock, setting up an intense final quarter. NOTES: Next up for the Raiders are the WPIAL fifth seed — either Washington or Greensburg Central Catholic — next Saturday at a District 9 site and time to be announced. Kane will head to the PIAA play-in round on Tuesday against the WPIAL’s eighth seed — either Beaver Falls or Jeannette — at a WPIAL site and time to be announced. … The Raiders won their first District 9 Class AA title since 1981. Their other D9 Class AA title came in 1976. Brookville was a Class AAA team from 1988 to 2004. It won district titles in 1992, 1996 and 1997. The Raiders’ title in 1997 did not earn them a state playoff berth. They qualified for states that year after competing in the District 6 playoffs, finishing second to Lewistown.
