KANE – Defending champion Elk County Catholic raced out to a 17-3 advantage and never look back defeating Otto-Eldred 55-18 in the District 9 Class A girls’ semifinals Tuesday night in Kane.

Emily Detsch scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the opening half helping the Lady Crusaders (22-4) build a 31-9 halftime lead. Karly Carnovale added 11 of her 15 points in the half.

ECC held Otto-Eldred (18-7) to only six field goals in the entire half and shutout the Lady Terrors leading scorer Taylor Thomas while limiting Jordan Beckwith, who torched Union for 28 points in the quarterfinals, to two points.

Ashley Brown and Taylor Palmer led Otto-Eldred with six points each.

ECC will now face West Forest in the District 9 championship game at either 5 or 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

Otto-Eldred will take on North Tier League rival Coudersport in the consolation game at a time, date and place to be announced.

NOTES – The 18 points were the fewest allowed in a District 9 girls’ playoff game since St. Marys beat Punxsutawney 51-14 to win the 2008 Class AAA championship. They are the fewest allowed in a Class A game since the first round of 2008 when Clarion beat Venango Catholic 35-16 and the fewest allowed in a Class A semifinal or title game since records started being kept in 1980. The previous low was 23 in the fall of 1980 when DuBois Central Catholic beat Port Allegany 36-23.  … ECC is making back-to-back title-game appearances for the first time in school history … Otto was held to its lowest point total of the season one game after scoring its highest total of the year (75) in the quarterfinal win over Union.
