PUNXSUTAWNEY – Hannah Neal and Amber Fye each scored 14 points to lead Punxsutawney to a 49-36 win over visiting Clearfield in the District 9 Class AAA girls’ semifinals Tuesday night.

Punxsutawney (12-11) led 25-18 at halftime and then outscored Clearfield (15-8) 24-18 in the second half to win the rubber match between the teams.

Shawnna Crago chipped in 11 points for the Lady Chucks, while Madison Sopic led Clearfield with 10 points. Jayme Ryan and Elizabeth Peters each chipped in with eight points for the Lady Bisons.

Punxsutawney will now take on two-time defending champion St. Marys, who had a bye into the title game, in the District 9 championship contest at either 1 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

NOTES – This is Punxsutawney’s 15^th District 9 championship game berth (either Class AAAA or AAA) in the last 19 years and its eighth Class AAA appearance in the last nine seasons. Punxsutawney won the first five of those title-game spots but has lost the last two including 51-14 to St. Marys two years ago, the last time the Lady Chucks were in the championship contest ... Punxsy and St. Marys split the season series.
