PUNXSUTAWNEY – D9Sports.com announced the RRR Roadhouse District 9 All-Decade boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at the Alice R. Kozel Foundation banquet Saturday afternoon in Punxsutawney. To be eligible for the all-decade team, a player must have played at least two years at a District 9 school between the 2000-01 season and the 2009-10 season. The boys’ all-decade team includes four of the Top 10 all-time leading scorers in District 9 history, while the girls’ all-decade team includes three of the Top 10 all-time leading scorers in District 9 history. For the boys’ the Coach of the Decade is Elk County Catholic’s Aaron Straub. Straub led the Crusaders to 250-50 mark (.833) during the decade, an average of 25 wins per season. That included six District 9 Class A titles, one PIAA Class A title and 10 PIAA playoff appearances. ECC was 28-5 in the District 9 playoffs during the decade and18-9 in the PIAA playoffs with five trips to at least the quarterfinals include two to the semifinals and one to the title game. In his career, Straub is 628-185 in 28 seasons as ECC’s boys’ coach and has a boys/girls combined record of 655-206, which is believed to be the most combined wins in District 9 history. He is 10 wins shy of tying Union’s Don Stemmerich (638 wins from 1955-93) for the most wins by a boys’ coach in District 9 history. Straub earned three All-District Coach of the Year honors during the decade (2002, 2006, 2009) and is a four-time recipient (2000) of the award. The boys’ all-decade team includes two of Straub’s former players, including his son A.J. Straub, as well as Jesse Bosnik. Also on the all-decade team are Johnsonburg’s Calvin Grumley, Keystone’s Garrett Heath and Coudersport’s Ryan Jones. Grumley is District 9’s all-time leading scorer with 2,255 points in a career that ended in 2007. He was a four-time All-District player including a three-time first-team choice. Heath is District 9’s second all-time leading scorer with 2,215 points in a career that ended in 2004. He was also a four-time All-District player including a pair of first-team honors and was a two-time Player of the Year (2003 and 2004). Bosnik, who graduated in 2007, is the fourth all-time leading scorer in District 9 history with 2,083 career points, one of just four District 9 players over 2,000 career tallies. He was also a two-time Player of the Year (2006 and 2007) and a four-time All-District selection including three-time first-team choice. Jones is the fifth all-time leading scorer in District 9 history with 1,907 points in a career that concluded in 2006. He was a two-time All-District player being named first team both times. Straub finished with 1,677 points, the second most in ECC history, in a career that ended in 2002. He was two-time All-District performer earning first-team honors both years. The girls’ all-decade Coach of the Year is Union’s Josh Meeker. Meeker, who took over the Union program in 2003, has an eight-year record of 177-46 (.794), an average of 22 wins per season including five 20-win seasons and eight 15-win campaigns. Meeker has led the Golden Damsels to three District 9 Class A titles (2005-07) and a 16-5 record in the District 9 Class A playoffs. Union is also 8-5 in the PIAA playoffs in five appearances under Meeker including reaching the semifinals in 2006 and the quarterfinals in 2005. Meeker was named the District 9 Coach of the Year four times during the decade (2004-07). The girls’ all-decade team includes one of Meeker’s former standouts, Andrea Mortimer, as well as two current players, West Forest’s Geena Sneeringer and St. Marys’ Kayla Hoohuli, as well as Cameron County’s Brittany McLean and Punxsutawney’s Stacie Heberling. Sneeringer is one of just four District 9 players with 2,000 career points and finished her career this season with 2,030 tallies, the fourth most in District 9 history. She is one of just two four-time all-district girls’ players during the decade and was a three-time first-team selection. Hoohuli, only a junior, is already the sixth all-time leading scorer in District 9 history with 1,951 points and is just the third three-time first-team all-district selection. She is a two-time District 9 Player of the Year as well (2009 and 2010) Heberling, who is the only other four-time all-district player this decade, was a three-time first-team selection and was the Player of the Year twice (2004 and 2005). She finished her career, which ended in 2005, as the all-time leading scorer in Punxsutawney history with 1,575 career points. McLean, a 2003 graduate, is the 10th all-time leading scorer in District 9 history and the leading scorer in Cameron County history with 1,753 career points. She was a three-time all-district performer including twice being named first team and twice being named the Player of the Year (2002 and 2003). Mortimer, a three-time all-district selection and two-time first-team choice, was the Player of the Year in 2006 and finished her career, which ended in 2006, with 1,550 career points, the fourth all-time leading scorer in Union history.
