RIMERSBURG - In the past two years, Otto-Eldred's season has ended at
the hands of Union in the quarterfinals of the District 9 playoffs. This
year, however, they got revenge as the fifth-seeded Lady Terrors defeated
fourth-seeded Union 53-48 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the District
9 Girls Class A Tournament.
The Lady Terrors (19-7) will face Coudersport in the semifinals at a site
to be determined.
With the win, the Lady Terrors also qualified for the PIAA Interdistrict
Tournament.
The Damsels opened the game with a 6-0 run, but the Lady Terrors answered
with a 5-0 run of their own and tightened the gap to 6-5 to finish the
first quarter.
The Lady Terrors would get their first lead of the game, 13-10, on a Katie
Barrett three-pointer with 5:12 left in the second quarter.
The Lady Terrors held that lead throughout the second quarter until
Union's Ashley Himes knotted the score at 22-22 in the waning moments of
the half.
Otto-Eldred scored the first six points of the third quarter to grab a
28-22 lead.
However, a 7-0 Damsels run gave Union a 29-28 lead with 1:45 left in the
third quarter.
The teams exchanged buckets in the final minute of third quarter as Union
held a slim 31-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Damsels seemed to have the game in hand with 1:49 remaining and a
41-34 lead.
However, numerous Union fouls would put Otto-Eldred on the foul line and
allow them to get back in the game.
Union held a five point, 43-38, lead with 30 seconds remaining when the
Lady Terrors mounted their comeback.
Melissa Covert hit a lay-up, was fouled, and cut the deficit to 43-41 with
the made free-throw.
Union's Billie Jo Conner was then fouled with 26 seconds left, but only
hit one of two free throws to give the Damsels a 44-41 lead.
This set the stage for Mackenna Bechelli's three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining
tying the game at 44.
Union's Rachel Eaton drove the length of the floor, but her runner would
not fall in the final moments of regulation.
Otto-Eldred would grab the overtime lead on another Bechelli three-pointer
with 3:34 left in OT.
From there, the Lady Terrors shot well from the charity
stripe, a place they had become familiar with as they attempted a total of
38 free-throws in the game, and held on for the 53-48 win.
Otto-Eldred was led by sophomore forward Melissa Covert's game-high 14
points, including 12 of 15 from the free throw line. Seniors Mandy Covert
and Katie Barrett each added 11 points.
Junior Rachel Eaton led the Damsels with 13 points, followed by sophomore
Ashley Himes' 12 points.
Coach Karen Davis' Damsels finished the season with a 15-10 record.
This game also marked the end of Karen Davis' coaching career at Union.
Coach Davis compiled a 205-61 record in 10 seasons as head coach at Union.
She also led the team to three KSAC titles, one District 9 title, four
trips to the District 9 Championship game, and seven appearances in the
PIAA Interdistrict Tournament.
