DEFENSE LEADS ST. MARYS PAST PORT ALLEGANY
Dec. 5, 2003

PORT ALLEGANY – St. Marys outscored Port Allegany 29-16 in the second half to expand a two-point halftime lead into a 55-40 win Friday night at Port Allegany.

The Dutchmen led 26-24 at halftime but outscored the Gators 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 39-31 lead. A 16-9 fourth-quarter margin for St. Marys provided the final score.

"The game was nip-and-tuck through three quarters," St. Marys head coach Anthony Allegretto said. "But we never let up on the defensive end."

Lopaka Hoohuli led St. Marys with 21 points including four three-pointers, while Tristan Mulcahy added 14 points and Caskey 10.

"Offensively we showed some patience for most of the game, and Lopaka and Tristan hit some big shots and foul shots to help us pull away in the final minutes."

Claude Haskins led Port Allegany with 14 points including two three-pointers, while Craig Flint chipped in with seven points including two three-pointers.

"Defensively this was out best effort thus far this season," Allegretto said. "Our guards shut down their scorers for the most part. Rarely did they get an open look at the basket. Mark Caskey and Joe Goetz clogged up the middle for their big men."

St. Marys returns to action Saturday night when it hosts Coudersport. Port Allegany is next in action Monday at Ellicottville, NY.
