PURCHASE LINE — Much like the first encounter, the margin of victory wasn’t large in Hollidaysburg’s win over DuBois. This time it meant a lot more, like playoff survival.

Hollidaysburg held off DuBois for a 47-42 victory in the preliminary round of the District 6-9 Class AAAA girls’ basketball playoffs Monday night at Purchase Line High School.

The Lady Golden Tigers (9-15) advance to Wednesday’s semifinal round against top-seeded Altoona at a site and time to be announced. DuBois finished the year at 10-14.

Hollidaysburg beat DuBois, 59-53, in their first meeting in DuBois back on Dec. 16. Unlike that meeting, however, DuBois didn’t fall behind by double figures. Instead, the Lady Beavers trailed by no more than eight points.

The Lady Beavers led just once, 14-13, early in the second quarter. Hollidaysburg didn’t put DuBois away until Becky Mielnik hit two free throws to give the Lady Tigers their largest lead of the game at 45-37 with 37.4 seconds remaining.

Neither team shot the ball well, barely over 30 percent. DuBois slightly outshot Hollidaysburg from the field and held the rebounding edge at 32-21, but 17 turnovers made their effort at winning a playoff game come up a little short.

Kelsey Wilcox led DuBois with 11 points and 12 rebounds, Rachel Robitzer scored 11 points and Megan Kosko finished with 10. Wilcox, Robitzer and Kaitlyn Fairman each fouled out of the game.

Hollidaysburg, which made just two of 17 shots from the three-point line, was led by Andrea Cooper’s 13 points. Jess Hollern scored 11 points and Julie Trimarco made four of six shots from the field and scored eight points.
