PIAA PROPOSES MOVING DISTRICT 3 CLASS A & CLASS AAAA SCHOOLS INTO WESTERN REGION FOR FOOTBALL |
| MECHANICSBURG – According to an Associated Press Article on Pennlive.com
Oct. 8, the PIAA has taken the first steps toward moving District 3 into the Western Region for its Class AAAA and
Class A football playoffs beginning next year.
District 3, which is located around Harrisburg, would be moved from the Eastern Region to the Western region as part of a proposal passed on a first-reading basis by the PIAA Board of Directors according to the article. In addition to the move, which would come about because of the addition of the Philadelphia schools into the PIAA starting next year as District 12, districts would be allowed to start the football season one week ahead of other fall sports. According to the Associated Press, PIAA executive director Brad Cashman said there will be additional changes proposed at the December meeting of the PIAA Board of Directors. The story goes onto to say the winner of the District 3 Class AAAA football championship would enter the state playoffs during the 13th week (PIAA quarterfinals) and would face the District 6 champion. The winner of that game would face the winner from Districts 7, 8, 9, 10 in the semifinals. If the proposal to allow football to start a week ahead of other fall sports is passed, football practice could begin Aug. 9, 2004, instead of Aug. 16, 2004, with the first week of games being played Aug. 27, 2004, instead of Sept. 3, 2004. |
