JIM MANNERS ELECTED DISTRICT 9 CHAIRMAN |
|
By Chris Rossetti RIDGWAY – In a surprise move at a special District 9 committee meeting July 7, Jim Manners of Brockway was elected to replace Larry Steiner of Clearfield as the District 9 chairman. Steiner had been elected chairman in April but at the step down after retiring from the Clearfield school district this summer because of health-related reasons. Manners had been elected vice-chairman at the April meeting. Aaron Straub of Elk County Catholic, a long-time member of the committee, was elected July 7 to replace Manners as vice-chair. The committee also decided it will fill Steiner’s spot on the committee at its Sept. 22 meeting. The candidate will have to be an administrator at one of District 9’s member schools. An early favorite for the position could be Redbank Valley athletic director Mike Brown who narrowly lost a bid for a seat in April’s elections. OTHER COMMITTEE ACTION Other action at the July 7 meeting included *A motion was unanimously accepted to accept a letter explaining the action taken by Johnsonburg Area High School administration to avoid a player participating in the next game following an ejection. *The official’s test will be given the first Monday in October, the first Monday in February and the first Monday in June. The test will also be given at the August Official’s Convention in Harrisburg. There is a possibility that the test will be given on-line. *The committee also heard reports from the summer workshop and were informed that any motion passed a summer workshop is a recommendation that will be presented to the Board of Directors. Any recommendation passed by the Board of Directors will be included in the PIAA newsletter. OTHER NEWS FROM AROUND THE DISTRICT It is official, Redbank Valley girls’ basketball coach Dave Moore is hanging up the whistle but only after an agonizing decision. Moore originally said he was going to retire from coaching following last season when his Lady Bulldogs were District 9 Class AA runner-ups. But after having some time to contemplate his decision, he decided he wasn’t ready to give it up quite yet. But alas the comeback didn’t last very long, as Moore decided recently after a few open gyms that coaching just wasn’t in the cards this season. |
