MERCATORIS; RIDDLE EARN STATE MEDALS IN GOLF |
|
YORK – Brookville's C.G. Mercatoris and Elk County Catholic's Emily Riddle earned state medals at the PIAA Golf Championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center Tuesday. Riddle, a junior who shared the state title with four other golfers in last year's rain-shortened event, actually held a one-shot lead after Monday's first round, but slipped in the second round with a 12-over-par 84 and finished tied for seventh place with a two-round score of 158, 13 behind winner Sarah Bejgrowicz of Manheim Township. Bejgrowicz trailed Riddle by one stroke after one round, but blistered the course on Tuesday despite miserable conditions with a 2-under-par 70 to win the tournament by nine strokes. Riddle, a two-time district champion, will have a chance to earn a fourth straight trip to states next year as a senior. In the boys' tournament, Mercatoris, the D-9 boys' champion finished in a five-way tie for sixth place after shooting a two-round score of 151, or 9-over-par. He shot a 75 Tuesday and a 76 Wednesday. Elk County Catholic's Kevin Smith, the 2005 district champion, also qualified for states and finished in a four-way tie for 28th place with an 18-over-par 160. |
