BRING HOME TITLES FROM 2007 PIAA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
SHIPPENSBURG – Smethport’s Ben Hahn and Kane’s D.J. Horton each took home gold medals over the weekend at the 2007 PIAA Track & Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
Hahn won the boys’ Class AA 3,200 Saturday in a time of 9:18.89, nearly 10 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Michael Stolar of Mercyhurst Prep (9:27.23).
Horton, meanwhile, took home D9’s first gold medal Friday when he won the boys’ Class AA pole vault with a vault of 14-9, three inches better than runner-up Kyle Miller of Catasauqua (14-6).
Redbank Valley’s Dan Jordan was the lone two-time place winner out of District 9. Friday, Jordan finished fourth in the boys’ Class AA shot put with a throw of 52-5, and Saturday he was the runner-up in the discus with a throw of 167-3, 13-feet, 8-inches behind champion Joe Kovacs of Bethlehem Catholic (179-11).
Jordan’s teammate Talon Gourley gave D9 two place winners in the boys’ Class AA pole vault finishing eighth at 14-0.
Karns City had two place winners. Tim Berteotti was sixth in the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.2, while Chris Harmon was seventh in the 800 in a time of 1:56.9.
Sheffield’s Jason Borst rounded out the boys’ Class AA place finishers by taking fourth in the 300 hurdles in a time of 39.50

PLACE IN CLASS AAA BOYS’ CHAMPIONSHIP
In the boys’ Class AAA championship, District 9 had two place winners.
DuBois’ D.J. Smith was third in the 300 hurdles (38.64), while Punxsutawney’s Laybn Hollis was sixth in the 200 (22.9).

RUNNER-UP FINISH TOP D9 CLASS AA GIRLS’ PERFORMANCE
Elk County Catholic’s Laura Straub turned in the best performance among District 9 Class AA girls’ performers with a second-place finish in the high jump Friday with a leap of 5-3. She was second to Northern Cambria’s Janee Dunchack, who also leaped 5-3 but needed less tries to reach the height.
Also in Class AA girls’ action, Karns City’s Xandria White was third in the long jump (17-1) Friday, while Union’s Tiffany Corle capped off a strong high-school athletics’ career by taking sixth in the javelin (136-10).

PLACE WINNER IN CLASS AAA GIRLS
DuBois’ Kim Hanslovan was the lone District 9 place winner in the Class AAA girls’ championships, but it was a top-notch performance. She finished second in the javelin Friday with a throw of 143-1, a foot behind champion Laura Rycek of Northampton.
