CATHCART NAMED DISTRICT 9 FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

 

CLARION -- Clarion's Kyle Cathcart is the 2001 D9Sports.Com District 9 Football Player of the Year after finishing off an outstanding four-year career at running back and linebacker with yet another fantastic season.

Cathcart, who was Co-player of the Year in 2000 with Brockway's Aaron Cantafio, was the leading rusher in District 9 this season rushing for 1,822 yards and 25 touchdowns on 211 carries an average of 8.64 yards per carry. He also caught three passes for 65 yards and a touchdown this season.

Twice he rushed for over 300 yards in a game while adding three 200-yard games and two more 100-yard games. He rushed for five touchdowns in a game once, four touchdowns in a game two times and three touchdowns in a game four times. In one of his four-touchdown games he also scored a receiving touchdown giving him five touchdowns in a game twice during the 2001 season.

The 26 touchdowns also helped Cathcart become the All-time District 9 touchdown king with 73, and the 1,822 yards gave him 4,449 for his career making him only the second known back to rush for over 4,000 yards in a career.

As good as Cathcart was on offense, he was just as good on defense recording 140 tackles in 2001 including 101 solo tackles while intercepting two passes, forcing four fumbles, recovering three fumbles and blocking a punt. He finished his career with 483 tackles, seven interceptions, 12 forced fumbles, 10 blocked punts and two defensive touchdowns.

Also an outstanding wrestler, who has won three Straight District 9 titles and two consecutive PIAA state titles, Cathcart recently signed a letter of intent to wrestle at Penn State where he might also try to walk onto the football team.
