KOZEL FOUNDATION DISTRICT 9 BOYS' ALL-STAR GAME PRODUCES GAME-RECORD SCORING |
|
March 31, 2007; Blue 125, White 121 |
| Union's Cooper named MVP; Late Slam Dunks highlight contest |
|
By Chris Rossetti DUBOIS – Going into the eighth annual Alice R. Kozel Foundation District 9 Boys’ All-Star game presented by Quaker Steak & Lube in State College, many believed it could be the best game yet thanks to a collection of some of the most talented players to ever grace the District 9 hardwood. But few could have expected what they got, which was a 125-121 win by the Blue Team that was highlighted by an impromptu slam-dunk contest in the game’s final two minutes at Penn State-DuBois Saturday. The contest also featured three of the top six all-time individual scoring marks and both teams shooting over 50 percent for the first time (Blue 54.2 percent; White 52.6 percent). The previous best shooting game was 49.4 percent by Blue in 2002. The 125 points by the Blue squad were the most scored by a team in the game’s history, while the 121 by the White team were the second most. Game MVP Gary Cooper of Union led all scorers with 26 points for the Blue Team including an incredible 11 of 13 (84.6 percent) shooting performance that included him hitting 11 of 12 (91.7 percent) from inside the arc. He added seven rebounds including four offensive while also blocking two shots and coming away with a steal. The 26 points were the second most in game history behind Elk County Catholic’s Tony Lecker D9Sports.com All-American Awards & Engraving District 9 Player of the Year Jesse Bosnik added 25 points on 10 of 25 shooting while also dishing out six assists and coming away with four steals. Calvin Grumley, the all-time leading scorer in District 9 history, led the White Team with 22 points on 10 of 14 shooting (71.4 percent). He added six rebounds, nine assists and two steals. The nine helpers were a game record. Blue led by eight – 114-106 – with 2:47 to play when White turned the contest into a slam-dunk fest. First ECC’s Josh Salter sent one home off a pass from Grumley to make it 114-108. Then after back-to-back 3-pointers by Tom Morris and Justin Schmader for Blue, Salter had the slam of the game if not the slam of the history of the game when he elevated and did a 360 degree turn before sending the ball through the hoop and brining the crowd to its feet. Grumley then followed with two slam dunks giving White four slam dunks in the final 2:36. In addition to the three 20-point scorers, the contest featured 10 additional players with at least 10 tallies. ECC’s Jimmy Higgins added 18 points for the White Team, while DuBois Central Catholic’s
Chris Wulderk had 16 for White and Salter and Smethport’s Zak Kossack 12 apiece. DCC’s Cody Wilson added 16 for Blue with Bradford’s Tom Morris and North Clarion’s Schmader, the leading scorer in D9 this season, each scoring 13. Keystone’s Dan Ferringer chipped in with 10. Blue started the game on fire going on a 21-8 run in the contests first 5:30 thanks to 10 points and an assist from Bosnik in the game’s first 4:20. Bosnik, one of four players in District 9 history with 2,000 career points, started the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and scored 10 of Blue’s first 12 points. But once Bosnik went off the floor, White stormed back going on a 26-11 run over the next six minutes to take a 34-32 lead behind six points apiece from Kossack and Higgins. White took the lead on a 3-pointer by Courson with 8:41 left in the first half. The game then went back and forth over the next few minutes before Blue regained the lead for good when it ended the half on a 21-9 run to take a 62-51 halftime lead. Cooper did most of the damage during the run scoring 11 of his points in the final 4:23 of the first half. Blue threatened to pull away early in the second half getting the lead back up to 13 – 74-61 – 3:13 into the half. But White hung in the game thanks to Higgins and Wulderk, who each scored six points in the opening five minutes of the half. That helped White go on a quick 9-0 run to cut the lead to 74-70 on a 3-pointer by Kossack with 15:22 left. White then got within two points – 76-74 – thanks to two straight baskets from Monteleone before Blue answered with a 23-12 run to go back up by 13 – 97-84 – with 8:17 left. The game stayed in double digits for most of the next seven minutes with a Schmader lay-up giving Blue a 122-112 lead with 1:01 to go. White closed the gap in the final minute thank to the dunks and a 3-pointer by St. Marys’ Louis Pisani. GAME NOTES – The previous highest scoring game was 223 combined points in 2001 when White won 116-107 over Blue in overtime. The 116 points by White that season had been the most points by a team in a game before this year … The 4-point game was the third closest in eight years. In 2005, Blue beat White 98-96 while in 2000, the game’s first year, Red beat White 98-95 … Kane’s Royce Novosel-Johnson held the assist record before Grumley beat it this year when he had seven in 2001 for Blue … Both teams were on fire in the second half with White shooting 57.4 percent and Blue 59.5 percent. |
