UNION'S CORLE, COOPER NAMED KOZEL ALL-STAR GAME MVP'S

DUBOIS – A pair of Union players took home MVP honors from the eighth annual Alice R. Kozel Foundation District 9 Basketball All-Star games presented by Quaker Steak & Lube of State College held Saturday at Penn State DuBois.

In the girls’ game, the Golden Damsels Tiffany Corle, the D9Sports.com All-American Awards & Engraving District 9 girls’ Player of the Year, put on a show. She scored 20 points on 9 of 13 shooting (69.2 percent) including 2 of 6 from 3-point range. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds including four on the offensive boards and had five assists, a block a game-tying record six steals while leading the White squad to an 87-62 win.

In the boys’ game, the Golden Knights Gary Cooper was unstoppable inside. Cooper had a game-high 26 points, the second most ever in Kozel game history, on 11 of 13 (84.6 percent) shooting. He was nearly perfect inside the paint hitting 11 of 12 (91.7 percent) shots. He added seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal while helping the Blue Team to a 125-121 win in the highest scoring game in Kozel history.

NOTES – Corle is the second straight Union ’s girls’ player to earn MVP honors at the game. Bethany Koch was the 2006 MVP … Union joins Punxsutawney as the only school to have two girls’ MVP’s … Cooper is just the third player from the KSAC to earn game MVP honors joining Moniteau’s Craig McCaslin, who was the MVP in 2003, and Clarion’s Charles Baschnagel, who was the MVP in 2001 … This year marks the first time the girls’ and boys’ MVP came from the same school.
