BUCHEIT EARNS MVP HONORS IN 11th ANNUAL ALICE R. KOZEL FOUNDATION DISTRICT 9 BOYS’ BASKETBALL ALL-STAR GAME
Kane product scores 26 points, grabs 8 rebounds in 113-84 Blue team win over
PUNXSUTAWNEY – Kane’s Dave Bucheit earned MVP honors in the 11th annual Alice R. Kozel Foundation District 9 All-Star game Saturday in Punxsutawney while scoring 28 points to help the Blue Team to a 113-84 win over the White Squad.
Bucheit hit a Kozel Game record 12 shots from the field going 12 of 14 including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. He added eight rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Bucheit was one of six Blue players in double digits. Keystone’s Ben Marchand added 17 points, Bradford’s Ryan Mackey had 14 points and eight rebounds, Johnsonburg’s Aaron Patrick added 12 points, eight boards and four assists while Clearfield’s Chad Zurat had 12 points, six rebounds and four helpers. North Clarion’s Kyle Gilbert chipped in with six points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, the third most assists in Kozel Game history. He also had four steals.
Five White players also reached double figures paced by 14 points from North Clarion’s Johnny Bobak, who added five rebounds and three assists. Johnsonburg’s Matt Shuey added 13 points and nine rebounds, Union’s Scott Booth had 13 points, three steals and two assists and Bradford’s Pug Fuhrman scored 11 points. Kane’s Arie Paup chipped in eight points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
Blue led 48-34 at halftime and then outscore White 65-50 in the second half while shooting 66.7 percent from the field in the second half and 53.3 percent for the game.
NOTES – The previous Kozel Game high for field goals was 11 shared by four players – Dubois Central Catholic’s John Ferraraccio in 2009, Moniteau’s Craig McCaslin in 2003, Elk County Catholic’s Tony Lecker in 2006 and Union’s Gary Cooper in 2007 … The 26 points are the second most in Kozel Game history tied with Cooper one behind Lecker … The Kozel Game assist record is 12 by DCC’s Christian Spilman in 2008. Johnsonburg’s Calvin Grumley had nine in 2007 … The girls’ 3-point contest was held at halftime and won by Cranberry’s Kirsten Neidich, who beat DuBois’ Kirsten Wilcox 8-6 in a shootout. Both had eight points in the first round.
